Meet Your Breast Reduction Surgeon

John Reilly, MD

Dr. John Reilly is a board-certified plastic surgeon and Chief of Plastic Surgery at Griffin Hospital. He specializes in breast reduction surgery and has helped countless patients find lasting relief from the physical and emotional challenges of overly large breasts.

With training from Yale and over 25 years of plastic surgery experience, he brings the surgical skill and personal attention that make all the difference in your results.

Are Your Breasts Holding You Back?

Large breasts can affect more than just how you look. They can interfere with your daily life, your comfort, and your health. If any of these feel familiar, breast reduction surgery may be the right next step.

  • Chronic back or neck pain: The weight of your breasts causes daily pain that won’t go away.
  • Shoulder grooving: Your bra straps dig in and leave painful marks.
  • Skin irritation: You deal with rashes and chafing beneath your breasts.
  • Difficulty exercising: Physical activity is uncomfortable no matter what bra you wear.
  • Limited clothing: Tops, dresses, and swimwear just don’t fit right.
  • Self-consciousness: You feel self-conscious about your chest in clothes, photos, or social settings.

“After my surgery, within 2 months I was running again and riding my horse. Those things were not possible for years before my breast reduction. This surgery changed my life! I highly recommend Dr Reilly and all of his staff!”

What is Breast Reduction Surgery?

Three Goals. One Procedure.

Reduce

Excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed to bring your breasts into proportion with your frame. The result is a lighter, more comfortable chest.

Lift

The breasts are repositioned higher on the chest wall, and the nipples are moved to a more natural location. Every reduction includes a lift.

Reshape

The remaining tissue is sculpted into a rounder, firmer contour that complements your body. The goal is a shape that looks natural and balanced.

The Procedure

Surgery typically takes two to four hours under general anesthesia. Dr. Reilly removes excess tissue, fat, and skin before lifting and reshaping the breasts into a smaller balanced contour.

What Happens on Surgery Day

Recovery & Aftercare

Most patients return to light activity within one to two weeks. You will wear a compression bra as your body heals, and your final shape will continue to settle over the following months.

SCARRING & Techniques

Understanding Breast Reduction Scars

Scarring is a natural part of any surgical procedure. The type, placement, and visibility of your scars depend on the reduction technique used and how your body heals. With proper care, most scars fade to thin, light lines that are hidden under clothing and swimwear.

Anchor

Inverted-T / Wise

Three incisions around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and horizontally along the fold. Used for larger reductions where significant tissue removal is needed. This is the most common technique and provides the most reshaping control.

Lollipop

Vertical

This technique uses two incisions. One around the areola and one running vertically down to the breast crease. There is no horizontal scar along the fold. It works for moderate reductions and results in less scarring with meaningful reshaping and lift.

Donut

Periareolar

A single incision around the areola only. Used for minor reductions, often with liposuction. This approach leaves limited visible scarring and is ideal for patients who need a modest decrease in size without significant reshaping.

Liposuction Only

No Visible Incision

Fat is removed through tiny punctures using thin cannulas. No traditional incisions are needed. Best suited for patients whose excess volume is primarily fatty tissue rather than dense glandular tissue. Scarring is minimal to nonexistent.

HOW YOUR LIFE IMPROVES

Life After Breast Reduction

Breast reduction doesn’t just change how you look. It changes how you live. Here’s what our patients tell us makes the biggest difference.

Move Without Pain

Exercise, play with your kids, or just get through the day without back pain or shoulder strain holding you back.

Wear what you want

Shop for clothes that actually fit. No more buying two sizes up or avoiding styles because of your chest.

Feel like yourself

Stand up straighter. Feel more confident. Stop worrying about unwanted attention or how you look in photos.

Frequently Asked Questions

We hear a lot of the same questions from patients who are thinking about breast reduction surgery. Here are a few of the most common questions to help you get started.

Many women breastfeed successfully after breast reduction. We use techniques that preserve function, and if it’s a priority for you, mention it at your consultation.

That depends on your body and your goals. We will talk through what’s realistic and help you decide on a size that fits your frame and lifestyle.

Most breast reductions take about two to three hours. You’ll go home the same day and start recovery right away.

In many cases, yes. If your breast size is causing physical symptoms like back pain or skin irritation, insurance may cover part or all of the procedure. Our team will help you navigate that process.

Yes, a lift is built into the procedure. Dr. Reilly removes excess tissue and reshapes the breast, so your results are both smaller and more lifted.

Your breasts may change slightly with age, weight fluctuations, or pregnancy. But most patients enjoy long-lasting results, especially compared to where they started.
